ISO releases its first innovation Management System standard

Companies’ ability to innovate is increasingly critical to their viability, competitiveness and resilience. Moreover, in all aspects it is critical to the development of more sustainable businesses and society.  But as with most everything else these days, approaching innovation in a structured way, managing risks and increasing the likelihood of desired results is of the essence. Adopting an innovation management system can reduce the level of uncertainty and increase the prognosis for success.

"In this transformational day and age, companies are increasingly pressured to perform. An ISO 56001 certified management system will help companies develop and demonstrate their innovation capability, enhance innovation performance and realize value for the company, customers and other interested parties," says Tor Gunnar Tollefsen, Global Service Manager for Management Systems in DNV.

Collaboration is an essential component of innovation.  An innovation management system based on ISO 56001 can help organizations seeking a shared framework to innovate together.  Moreover, it is highly relevant for organizations seeking to build confidence in their innovation capabilities toward potential partners, suppliers or other interested parties or funders, donors or investors looking to qualify a funding applicant or partner organization.  For policy makers and government authorities, it can be relevant in order to promote innovation activities at local, regional and national levels.

"We in DNV are very happy to see this standard be added to the ISO family. Beyond contributing to our customers’ ability to effectively manage innovation processes, it also fosters necessary contributions toward more sustainable business performance and the UN SDG targets," says Tor Gunnar Tollefsen.
The standard can be downloaded on the ISO website.
