DNV accredited by ASI for ASC Feed certification
Ensuring sustainably sourced feed in the aquaculture sector is essential, from using environmentally responsible raw materials to socially responsible suppliers. The ASC Feed standard emphasizes and puts forth a comprehensive approach by requiring responsible sourcing for major feed ingredients.
“We are very pleased to announce our accreditation from ASI for ASC feed certification. It truly supports our commitment to help the aquaculture industry tackle one of the biggest impacts – the production of feed,” says Xaviere Lagadec, Global Aquaculture Manager in DNV.
The ASC Feed accreditation is a scope extension to DNV’s existing ASC Farm accreditation. Also providing certification to the chain of custody standard, this extends DNV’s existing aquaculture service portfolio from feed to fork.
Today around 75% of global aquafeed ingredients are derived from agriculture, i.e. crops like soy, wheat and rice. Farming can have significant impact, notably deforestation and land conversion, which are often overlooked in debates on the aquaculture industry where scrutiny tends to be on marine resources.
The ASC Feed standard demands that plant-based ingredients, as with marine-based, be recorded and reported by feed mills supplying the aquaculture industry. All ingredients that make up over 1% of a feed are subject to this rule and mills will need to take steps to ensure they have been responsibly sourced. They must also assess the risk of a particular ingredient contributing towards deforestation or land conversion and, if relevant, commit to transitioning to a supply chain free from these key negative impacts.
“Aquaculture farms certified to the ASC Farm standard have until 31 October 2025 to switch to ASC compliant feed to maintain their certification. DNV is now ready to support feed mills and farms across the globe,” concludes Xaviere Lagadec.
